Seeing what is operative in any system at any scale — the same Control–Decay patterns from the individual mind through the civilization, across short and long horizons.

The Work

The work is to identify what is producing the pattern you can see: the feedback loop, payoff, rule, condition, measurement pressure, power dynamic, or process through time. The reading can move from a person to an institution or a civilization, and from a single exchange to a generational arc. Its boundary is functional. This category comes before checking whether a representation still fits reality, combining several lenses, choosing an intervention, or governing the response.

Five Routes Through the Tools

The routes below help you find a useful first instrument. They are not five new categories, and the boundaries between them are deliberately permeable. A common-pool problem can be a strategic field, a collective trap, and an institutional problem at once. The primary route tells you where to begin.

Structure and change through scale and time

Entropy. Systems degrade without active maintenance; the lens for how order requires sustained energy to hold against decay.

Feedback Loops. How a system's outputs return as inputs, either amplifying the pattern or stabilizing it.

Evolutionary Mismatch. Where traits shaped for older environments misfire under modern conditions.

Network Effects. How the value, cost, or danger of a choice changes as more actors make the same choice.

Emergence. System-level properties that arise from interactions among parts and cannot be understood by inspecting the parts alone.

Leverage Points. Where force sits inside the system before intervention begins.

Dependent Origination. Phenomena read through the conditions that make them arise, not as isolated causes or self-contained things.

Antifragility. Whether a system is harmed, preserved, or strengthened by volatility, stress, error, and disorder.

Lindy Effect. Survival over time as evidence for nonperishable things, without confusing endurance for truth or moral worth.

Red Queen Effect. Adaptive pressure where continuous movement is required simply to maintain position because the surrounding field is moving too.

Strategic fields

Prisoner's Dilemma. Situations where individually rational defection produces a worse shared outcome than cooperation would have produced.

Nash Equilibrium. Strategic stability where no actor improves by changing strategy alone.

Positive-Sum vs Zero-Sum Framing. Whether an interaction is fixed-pie conflict, mutual loss, or a field where cooperation can create more value.

Schelling Points. Tacit coordination around a salient point people expect others to expect, especially when communication is limited or incomplete.

Collective traps

Moloch. Competitive race dynamics that reward actors for sacrificing shared values until everyone is worse off and no one can safely stop alone.

Inadequate Equilibria. Bad stable states where visible improvements remain unused because no actor has enough incentive, authority, coordination, or permission to fix the system alone.

Tragedy of the Commons. Shared-resource failure where private extraction is rewarded and depletion costs spread across the group and the future.

Institutional machinery

Rules-in-Use. The diagnostic for what rule actually governs behavior here, and whether the formal rule constrains action when following it costs something.

Action Situation Mapping. The concrete decision field where participants, rules, information, actions, and outcomes meet.

Mechanism Design. The diagnostic for reading what behavior a rule, incentive structure, or institutional process makes rational.

Polycentric Governance. Distributed authority through multiple overlapping decision centers, without collapsing into command or fragmentation.

Measurement, visibility, and power

Goodhart's Law. How a useful measure degrades when people are pressured to optimize it as a target.

Legibility. How institutions simplify reality so it can be seen, governed, counted, and controlled.

Chilling Effects. How anticipated punishment, surveillance, ambiguity, and social cost suppress behavior before punishment is applied.

Instrumental Power Tripwires. An AI-specific practice for naming a task's resource envelope and surfacing when useful subgoals begin accumulating access, persistence, influence, reduced oversight, or optionality beyond task need.

Long-horizon observational lineages remain protocol-gated. Current search territories include kaitiakitanga, seven-generation thinking, and additional deep-time observational practices, but none of them is treated here as an admitted tool until source-lineage review establishes its exact mechanism, placement, and translation rule.
